Top Recreation Stocks For 2014

Marijuana may have become legalized for medical use in 20 states and legal for recreational use in two states, but what has not been legalized is how these companies conduct their business. Due to federal banking laws, these are effectively cash businesses which have a very hard time using banks and other regulated financial institutions. New Treasury guidelines may soon open the way to bring legal marijuana businesses into banking.

The Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issued guidance on Friday. This memorandum is being called the “Cole Memo,” after James M. Cole – Deputy Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice.

Now there is a framework for financial institutions to slowly begin providing financial services to legal marijuana-related businesses. What is called the FinCEN guidance aims to clarify how financial institutions can provide services to marijuana related businesses consistent with their Bank Secrecy Act obligations.

John Raoux/AP From a questionable Hollywood sequel hitting the silver screen to a controversial theme park operator hoping to prove that it's not all wet, here are some of the things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Seizing Caesars Things are getting tense at Caesars Entertainment (CZR). The casino operator made waves last week as some of its creditors initiated a lawsuit claiming that Caesars is transferring assets out of the company as the first step to defaulting on its gargantuan debt. The corporate soap opera will have to play itself out, but on Monday afternoon we'll hear what Caesars has to say as it reports quarterly results. Given the brow-raising restructuring efforts, it's a safe bet that analysts will be asking more about the asset transfer and the lawsuit than the gaming giant's own operations, including massive renovations of The Quad. Tuesday -- Sweet Tooth for Candy Crush There has never been a mobile app as lucrative as King Digital Entertainment's (KING) Candy Crush Saga, paving the way for the casual gaming darling's initial public offering earlier this year. King went public at $22.50, but fears that the game's popularity had peaked late last year kept gains check. The stock currently trades below its March IPO price. King Digital has also used the game's success to introduce players to some of its other apps, though Candy Crush Saga still accounted for two thirds of King's gross bookings during this year's first quarter. We'll get fresh financials out of King on Tuesday, making this a great time to see if Candy Crush Saga is gaining momentum or if King is doing a better job of diversifying its revenue streams. Wednesday -- Get Whale, Soon SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) splashes in with its latest quarterly results on Wednesday. Attendance has been sliding since last year's "Blackfish" documentary made it politically incorrect to visit the marine life theme park. If there's a time for the turns

  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

www.seaworld.com SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) can't seem to catch a break. Shares of the marine life theme park operator were gutted on Wednesday after posting abysmal quarterly results. Revenue declined 1 percent to $405.2 million on flat attendance growth. Net income checked in at $0.43 a share. Wall Street was holding out for a profit of $0.51 a share with a healthy increase in revenue. From Bad to Worse As maligned as SeaWorld has been since going public at $27 a share last year, this was supposed to be its turnaround quarter. Everything seemed to be going its way. The bad weather and price hikes that resulted in a 9 percent slide in attendance during the second quarter of last year should have been a springboard this time around. The shift of the Easter holiday this year -- going from March in 2013 to April in 2014 -- should have provided the school holidays that boost turnstile clicks. After all, SeaWorld blamed the timing of Easter for the 13 percent plunge in attendance during the first three months of this year. As bad as the second quarter was for SeaWorld, the second half of the year is going to be even more of a mess. SeaWorld now sees revenue sliding 6 percent to 7 percent for all of 2014 -- with profitability falling even harder. Desperation is starting to set in. The second quarter was the first time in the company's brief publicly traded tenure that attendance outpaced revenue growth. That's surprising given SeaWorld's annual rate increases, suggesting that SeaWorld is doing a lot of discounting and promotional activity to get guests into its theme parks. SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego were the two biggest disappointments during the quarter, and even though the park operator refuses to call out "Blackfish" by name it's clear that last year's documentary is taking its toll. Killer PR "Blackfish," the film that took SeaWorld to task for having killer whales in captivity and placing its trainers in danger, wasn't much of a box off

However, with the economy improving, it's easy to understand why Six Flags is comfortable with its leveraged situation. Last week's well-received SeaWorld Entertainment (NYSE: SEAS  ) IPO and a fresh all-time high for theme-park juggernaut Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) today validate the attractiveness of buying into park operators these days.

Alamy When you read something discouraging about a company you patronize or invest in, it's easy to think there isn't much you can do about it. But of course that's not true. As a customer, you can simply stop giving the company your business. If you're a shareholder, you can vote for or against various proposals for the company. And if those options don't feel like enough, there's another way to voice your displeasure -- a tactic that is growing in popularity and is truly bring about changes: You can start or sign a petition. If your first reaction to that is, "Nonsense, petitions never accomplish anything," your skepticism is understandable. But it's a little out of date. Social media has changed the petition game as it has changed so many other things. Banding Together for Change By now, you've probably seen petitions pop up on your Facebook (FB) page. You might have even signed some. But we don't often hear what happens next. In many cases, they work. For example, 162,150 people signed a petition protesting the name of a Jacksonville, Fla., high school, which had been named in the 1950s after a slave trader and Ku Klux Klan member, and the school board has agreed to change its name at the start of the new school year. Changes can happen at big companies, too. More than 307,000 petitioners were successful in getting Tyson Foods (TSN), the second-largest food-production company in the Fortune 500, to "stop torturing pigs." The company announced new animal-welfare guidelines for its pork suppliers, requiring more room for pigs to move around and more humane methods of killing the animals. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) is another example. It had long been criticized for policies such as not offering clothing in larger sizes and making someone's looks a major hiring criteria in order to distance itself from anyone other than "cool, good-looking people." The company has finally agreed to start offering plus-size clothing, likely persuaded in part by more t

The main rival that RealD faces is IMAX (NYSE: IMAX  ) , and the biggest challenge IMAX poses for RealD is that IMAX and its huge-screen theaters give viewers an impressive experience even with 2-D films. That flexibility has been a key component driving IMAX's growth, with a global footprint extending to hundreds of theaters in more than 50 countries worldwide. RealD has tried to match that with its precision white-screen technology, but RealD can't make theater-operators install the huge screens to match up to IMAX.

From an ill-conceived entry into the crowded tablet market to the leading online retailer jacking up its minimum order size for free shipping, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst moves in the business world. Zynga (ZNGA) -- Winner Zynga has a long way to go to regain its former status as a market darling, but the casual and social gaming giant is doing its best to claw its way back. Bookings have fallen sharply at Zynga, but investors may rediscover the once hot stock with London-based King -- the company behind the wildly popular Candy Crush Saga -- getting ready to go public. Tablet Tuesday -- Loser It was supposed to be a great day for tablets. Tuesday treated gadget buffs to Nokia (NOK) announcing its first tablet, Microsoft (MSFT) starting to sell its Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets, and Apple (AAPL) unveiling its latest line of iPads. The morning kicked off with Nokia introducing a Lumia-branded tablet. The problem is that it runs Windows RT, the operating system that's so unpopular that Microsoft took a $900 million inventory charge earlier this year to write off the weak-selling Surface RT. Then came Microsoft tablets arriving at retailers, including the Surface 2 that happens to run, yes, on Windows RT. Apple's event went far better, but the stock sold off after the presentation. One concern is that the new iPad mini is getting an increase in price. Apple has never boosted the price of next-gen iPads, but now it's doing so with the smaller iPad mini. That may not go over so well in a market where competing tablets have only gotten cheaper over time. IMAX (IMAX) -- Winner They say that the
