    Valuation

Over the next five years growth in the Asian market will likely boost the overall modest premium growth rate, averaging it at 2%, while the total revenue CAGR recovers to 3% after the steep declines reported since 2012. Furthermore, Manulife ROE will continue its current upward trend, increasing from 2013 10.9% to an average 12% by 2018, accompanied by the steadily expanding net margins of 16.8%. While it will take some time for the company growth to accelerate, I feel bullish about management optimism regarding its business shift, and see the dividend yield and returns on equity as solid benefits for a long term investment. Moreover, the firm is currently trading at a 10% price discount relative to the industry average of 14.0x, making it a relatively inexpensive buy.

Insurance companies have created an entire industry based upon risk, and except for AIG (NYSE: AIG  ) during the financial crisis, it has worked out pretty well. So, it's not a stretch to imagine a large life insurer like Canada's Sun Life Financial (NYSE: SLF  ) assuming the pension liability for the Canadian Wheat Board's defined benefit plan in a recent $147 million deal, the first such accord in Canada's history.

Historically the stock prices of Deere (DE) and other agricultural equipment firms and retailers like Case-New Holland (CNH), Titan Machinery (TITN), AGCO (AGCO), Tractor Supply (TSCO), Valmont (VAL), and Lindsay (LNN) have tended to closely track the price of corn. When corn prices go up, farmers tend to make more money, and they spend that money on new equipment from Deere and other firms. This relationship is especially strong for Deere and Corn, but it holds true for all of the stocks above to some extent. (Correlation coefficients between all of the stock prices above and corn are statistically significant to at least the 5% level, see my blog here for more details.)

Raytheon's rockets will be deployed to defend the base, while Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) is managing the overall project. And last week, we found out who will build it, when government contractor KBR (NYSE: KBR  ) was awarded $134 million to turn the 430-acre site into a missile base.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Mid-cap construction and engineering firm KBR Inc. (KBR) is another name with a mountain of cash sitting on the books. The firm currently sports $895 million in net cash on its balance sheet, enough to cover 29% of its current price per share. That effectively reduces the risks of this contractor's share price by a third.

KBR is an engineering and construction services contractor that primarily serves the U.S. government and the energy sector. Until 2006, KBR was a unit of Halliburton (HAL), a connection that gives it deep-rooted connections with the oil and gas business, where the firm has transitioned much of its sales efforts. Prior to that, KBR's bread and butter was the sole contractor of food service, utilities, laundry, and other services for U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan – but that changed after a series of missteps from KBR that prompted the government to add other contractors to the current iteration of the LOGCAP contract.

Bigger exposure to the private sector is a good thing -– restructuring efforts and a new management team should help steer the ship around. It's that huge cash position that helps to make KBR worth a closer look in 2014. While it's more speculative than the other names on our cash-rich list, it's also the one with the most upside potential on near-term catalysts.

The McArthur River mine, the highest grade mine in the world (16.36% U3O8, 100 times the global average), began production in November 2000. Cameco's share of the proven and probable resources is 264 mil lbs. The mine has produced 230 mil lbs in the last 13 years. CCJ's current year share is over 13 mil lbs.

  • [By Joshua Bondy]

Cameco (NYSE: CCJ  ) is the world's preeminent pure-play uranium miner. It has a host of high-quality mines and a small total debt-to-equity ratio of 0.25. Its margins are low as the industry is still recovering from Fukushima, but this has allowed Cameco to buy up assets from potentially dangerous competitors. The good news is that its gross margin of 35.2% lets it sit back and watch the market recover.

  • [By Dividend]

In addition, it had 120 gross producing wells. The company was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By RichardCox]

The first stock choice we look at here is Enerplus Corp. (ERF), which has most of its resources invested in Western Canadian properties that are in the mature development stage. This puts the company in a solid position (as far as risk protection) for two reasons: The company is largely shielded from potential supply disruptions if Middle East conflicts cause transport blockages at the Suez Canal. Furthermore, Canada holds its position as the largest source of U.S. oil imports -- nearly doubling what is sent annually by Saudi Arabia. Yearly numbers for 2012 put Canadian oil imports at roughly 2.8 million barrels in a supportive trend that helped second-quarter earnings at Enerplus rise by 10%. The fundamental sector outlook is suggestive of additional runs higher in Enerplus, and these should begin to gain traction once the external uncertainties (political gridlock, stimulus tapering) begin to resolve themselves. The stock also comes with a 6.4% dividend yield, which will help investors weather the storm if the recent declines in oil extend further.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The biggest worry that some investors have about Pengrowth is that its dividend is large compared to its earnings. Similar issues forced Penn West Petroleum (NYSE: PWE  ) , also a former Canroy, to cut its dividend a couple months ago. Although extraordinary measures have helped Pengrowth and Enerplus (NYSE: ERF  ) sustain payouts at levels that were last reduced in the middle of 2012, both companies could eventually see further pressure on their payouts in future.
