Best Net Payout Yield Stocks To Own For 2014

Last Thursday, United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) attempted to raise fares by $10 per round-trip on most routes within the continental U.S. This represented the eighth time in 2013 that an airline instituted a broad-based fare increase, but the first since Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) tried to raise fares in April.

However, by Monday, United had rolled back the fare increase after other carriers -- particularly Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) -- did not match it. After this failure, airlines have a pretty poor "batting average" this year in terms of price increases; of the eight attempted fare hikes this year, just two have stuck!

Clearly, airlines have no appetite for fare hikes right now due to sluggish demand. With oil prices starting to creep up again, this could crimp profitability during the second half of 2013.

A legacy of fare hikes
The airline industry's renaissance over the last few years can be attributed in part to improved capacity discipline and pricing power. Even though oil prices rose steeply from 2009 to 2012, most of the major airlines were able to stay profitable by cutting unprofitable routes when necessary and raising fares on the remaining ones.

    We're seeing the exact same setup in shares of simulation software maker ANSYS (ANSS). Like CSC, ANSYS is sandwiched between a horizontal price ceiling above shares around $90 a share and a similar horizontal floor at $83.50 a share. From here, the trading signal comes on a breakout outside of the channel.

    Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Rectangles, triangles, and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable – instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

    That $90 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant – the move means buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Don't be early on this trade.

    Let us contrast this with TROV's progress. TROV has secured two critical partnerships -- with Illumina (ILMN), and PerkinElmer (PKI). Company filings on the ILMN deal don't provide much detail, but the filings with the PKI deal detail how PKI wants to use TROV's science to develop a new t assay to detect the presence of hepatocelluar carcinoma (HCC). While these two partnerships do not guarantee approval in any way, they do provide a solid validation for TROV's technology.

    We're seeing the same exact price setup in shares of mid-cap insurance broker Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) -- just in the shorter-term. AJG has been forming an ascending triangle setup of its own since the beginning of May, hitting its head on resistance at $45.50. That's the breakout level to watch in shares this week.

    Imperial Holdings (IFT) fits the bill for all of those traits and investors today can buy Imperial Holdings for less than 0.75x book value. Upside to book value, an obvious valuation factor for most financial companies, would result in a greater than 40% return for a patient investor. I believe that this is far below the fair value for IFT�� book of life settlements, and upside is in excess of $13 per share.
