Deutsche Bank (DB) was down 4.5% at recent check, after a disappointing second-quarter report.

This morning, Deutsche said it earned to 34 million ($443 million), o .32 per share, down from 56 million in the same quarter last year.

Revenue rose 2% to .22 billon from .02 billion.

Analysts were looking for the company to earn .82 a share on revenue of .39 billion.

Legal costs were the big drag in the quarter, as Deutsche is involved in investigations into the manipulation of interbank rates and the U.S. mortgage business, among other issues. The quarter included a 30 million charge for potential litigation and related costs, and Deutsche said it now has litigation reserves of billion, up from .4 billion at the end of the first quarter.

CFO Stefan Krause told analysts that the bank has already hit its targeted leverage ratio of 3% under European regulations put into law in June, but too many moving parts make calculating the ratio under new proposals impossible. Analysts are estimating the bank new leverage ratio is 2.3%.

S&P Capital IQ Frank Braden maintained a Buy rating on Deutsche American depositary shares, but lowered his earnings estimates for the year. e view the lower fixed income results as a product of the operating environment and not a change in the bank’s competitive position. Capital ratio improvements are tracking ahead of our expectations as the bank reported a Basel 3 capital ratio of 10.0% during the quarter./p>

In the process of turning around the operations, the company had to take on some loans and now the loan with Deutsche Bank (DB) is suffocating the company. Veris has to be paying out $50 million a year to the bank. This is half a billion dollar worth of value. Because of this, the company cannot ever have any cash buffer because everything is going to Deutsche Bank. This wouldn be an issue if the price of gold did not collapse in April this year. As a result, there is constant dilution which includes your shares. How can you just sit there and watch the company dilute itself to death? Turning around the operations required a lot of work and pain. But it was successfully achieved. Now it needs its loans restructured. In other words, it needs a financial turnaround which is nothing but signing a bunch of loan documents. I have to believe that signing papers is a lot easier than fixing a roaster and putting three mines into production, don you think? But no, you just sit there and watch your ownership getting diluted while the operations are breaking new record highs. Yes, I understand that financing is hard for the mining companies, but collectively, you control billions of dollars of investment capital.

"I don't think the NYSE exists anymore period." Dick Bove

So where does that leave the exchange as a physical property? If you close your eyes tightly enough you can almost see the tumbleweeds rolling across the cobblestones past the Wall Street subway station, past the Deutsche Bank (DB) building and gliding on a path to nowhere. After all, what possible use could there be for such a structure in the next age of trading? "I don't think the NYSE exists anymore period," said Dick Bove, the outspoken banking analyst and vice president of equity research at Rafferty Capital Markets. "I think it's a good television set" for appearances in the media. But is it possible the building will serve no function? Bove sees the global financial center shifting from New York to wherever countries are committed to a thriving banking sector and not obsessed with handcuffing "too big to fail" institutions. He also points out that the exchange isn't even owned by a New York firm anymore, and that most of the trading happens at high-frequency nerve centers in New Jersey.

However, I do believe that these lists represent an efficient group of prescreened opportunities that are worthy of further consideration. There are other dividend candidates such as Johnson Controls (JCI) and Illinois Tool Works (ITW) that were covered in the previous article Part 1, that do not meet the standard of consecutive dividend increases. Accordingly, I do not consider this a comprehensive or complete list of all possible dividend growth opportunities, but I do consider them a great place to start looking.

It's no secret that 3M Co. (NYSE: MMM  ) is one of the best run companies in North America, and it's also no secret that the company's stock valuation of 20 times current earnings is hardly cheap. The company is best understood as a play on global industrial growth, and in this sense it's useful to compare it to other industrial stalwarts, such asIllinois Tool Works (NYSE: ITW  ) and Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR  ) . Withthis in mind, investors need to ask themselves what 3M needs to do to make it a good value.

Murphy USA (MUSA) first caught my attention after Southeastern Asset Management acquired a massive stake ($668mm) in its former parent company Murphy Oil Corporation (MUR) in Q1 2013. One thing about Murphy Oil Corporation I noticed after an initial glance through their 10-K and annual report was its ownership of a valuable fuel and convenience retailer segment with high ROIC, valuable real estate, low CAPEX requirements, and relatively decent growth prospects that was under-followed and whose underlying value was concealed by the parent company's core production and exploration business.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Clash of the titans
When bears are raging on the gold bullion market, it's not surprising to see gold stocks getting mauled as well. Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  ) was the biggest loser in the sector, losing a quarter of its market cap on no company-specific news, though a report last Friday indicated that a large number of hedge funds had recently dumped their positions in the mid-tier miner. Yet it wasn't all that much better among the majors, either, as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) fell almost 13% and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) was down 14%.

  • [By Itinerant]

Goldcorp, Newmont (NEM) or Agnico-Eagle use similar definitions. The important element here is the so-called 'sustaining capital expenditure', which is the capital required to sustain existing production levels. The table below is taken from the Agnico-Eagle presentation referenced above and provides a comparison of company-wide AISC for some of the major gold miners, including Goldcorp, Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining, Yamana Gold (AUY), Randgold (GOLD), Kinross (KGC), Agnico-Eagle Mines, Eldorado Gold (EGO), Goldfields and Centerra (CAGDF.PK). The difference between cash costs and AISC is significant. It is also important to note that these AISC are still noticeably below the present spot price for gold.
